In vergelijking met de eerste decennia in de ruimtevaart is de techniek zo betrouwbaar geworden dat de levensduur van een satelliet of ruimtesonde niet zozeer meer bepaald wordt door de levensduur van bepaalde onderdelen dan wel door de hoeveelheid brandstof aan boord. Dawn en Kepler zijn twee mooie voorbeelden. De eerste heeft men nu in zijn laagste baan ooit boven Ceres gebracht, nu de hydrazine voor de stuurraketjes begint op te geraken. Ondanks allerlei pech bleef ook Kepler langer dan verwacht aan het werk. Maar ook hier wordt de bodem van de brandstoftank nu wel echt zichtbaar.
