Het werd weer een interessante ruimtevaartweek, en dat was mede te danken aan de bijeenkomst in San Francisco van de American Geophysical Union (AGU). Eén van de meest besproken resultaten die er gepresenteerd werden, was het methaan-verhaal van Curiosity.

Afgelopen week waren er ook weer een aantal lanceringen. De 400ste Protonlancering verliep zonder problemen. Ook de Indiërs kenden succes met een eerste test van hun nieuwe zware raket. Het was tevens de test van een prototype van een bemande capsule. Een Soyuz-raket bracht 4 O3b-satelllieten in een baan om de Aarde. Ander raketnieuws is er over Angara 5, de Falcon 9 en Antares.

Rusland denkt aan een eigen ruimtestation. De toekomst zal uitwijzen of het de volgende jaren ook realiteit wordt. Bij de NASA stelden ze een aantal beslissingen i.v.m. de Asteroid Redirect Mission uit tot begin 2015.

Nieuws over Rosetta en Philae was er ook op de AGU-bijeenkomst. Meer resultaten die er deze week voorgesteld werden, vind je terug in een wederom uitgebreid hoofdstuk (inter)planetair nieuws. En voor de Google Lunar X Prize wordt de deadline opgeschoven. En Kepler ontdekte een nieuwe exo-planeet, de eerste uit het tweede leven van de sonde.

Belangrijk succes voor de Indiërs.
India testte de (eerste trap v/d) nieuwe generatie Geostationary Space Launch Vehicle. De tweede trap was hierbij aanwezig, maar enkel als een dummy. De nuttige lading was CARE, een test van wat de Indische bemande capsule moet worden.
