Begin oktober is “The Martian” in de Belgische bioscopen te zien. Een astronaut blijft alleen achter op Mars en moet er zien te overleven, in afwachting van zijn redding. De film is dan ook een ideaal moment om bemande reizen naar Mars in de aandacht te brengen. Spijtig voor Mars One, maar in een debat tijdens de jaarlijkse Mars Society Convention konden ze niet echt overtuigen. Verder zijn er momenteel een aantal simulaties die net opgestart zijn of die weldra zullen opstarten, alle gerelateerd aan lange ruimtereizen. Met de jaarlange HI-SEAS-simulatie als uitschieter. Tenslotte geven we ook een overzicht van een aantal recent verschenen artikels rond reizen naar Mars. Zo zal Buzz Aldrin mee helpen een plan uit te werken om mensen tegen 2040 op de Rode Planeet te brengen.

De eerder gelanceerde Japanse vrachtcapsule werd met behulp van de robotarm aan het ruimtestation gehangen. China lanceerde een militaire verkenningssatelliet, en ook India lanceerde een satelliet. De Amerikanen deden een nieuwe test van het Orion-parachutesysteem en een eerste fase rond het testen van de RS-25-motor (SLS-raket) werd met een zevende test afgerond. De Russen knoopten weer aan met succes, dankzij een geslaagde Proton-lancering.

Aan boord van het ISS bereiden ze de komst voor op een nieuwe bemanning, welke volgende week zal gelanceerd worden. Zo werd o.a. een Soyuz-capsule van koppelingspoort verhuisd. Leuk was ook het bericht dat de Russen geen urine willen drinken, maar dat de Amerikanen wel ijverig de Russische urine recycleren.

NASA moest het ook komen uitleggen of ze SpaceX anders behandelden dan OSC in het onderzoek naar de oorzaken van hun respectievelijke mislukte lanceringen. Wat het Russische Vostochny betreft, de eerste bemande lancering is er met tien jaar uitgesteld. En Virgin Galactic lijkt het ruimtetoerisme wat minder prioritair te maken.

NASA maakte deze week ook de nieuwe bestemming bekend voor New Horizons welke in juli met succes voorbij Pluto vloog. In het andere (inter)planetaire nieuws is er o.a. het bericht dat men denkt aan om sondes in een baan rond Uranus en/of Neptunus te brengen. En Gaia vierde zijn eerste verjaardag in de ruimte.

Mars One krijg harde noot te kraken.
Op de jaarlijkse Mars Society Convention in Amerika was er een debat tussen de mensen van Mars One enerzijds, en twee personen van een MIT-groep die recentelijk in een rapport het hele Mars One project de grond in boorden. Het twee uur durende debat (hier te bekijken ) verliep niet al te goed voor Mars One. Het rapport kan je hier nog eens raadplegen.
