New Horizons stuurde voor het eerst sinds enkele weken nieuwe foto's door van Pluto. En opnieuw toonde deze foto's een wereld die veel complexer was dan dat we ooit gedacht hadden. Ook op Ceres blijft men met vragen zitten want ondanks nieuwe meer gedetailleerde beelden weet men nog steeds niet wat die witte vlekken op het oppervlak van deze dwergplaneet wel mogen zijn.

Twee lanceringen waren er in de afgelopen week. Een Soyuz-raket lanceerde van op Frans Guyana twee Europese navigatiesatellieten. En een onverwachte Chinese lancering bracht wellicht een militaire satelliet in de ruimte.

Aan boord van het ISS mocht de Europese astronaut een beetje “spelen” met een robotauto op Aarde, een experiment waar ook het Belgische B.USOC een rol in speelde. Ondertussen is Mogensen al weer terug op de Aarde.

Ook deze week weer heel wat raketnieuws. SpaceX werkt hard aan de “return to fligh” van de Falcon 9-raket en stelde ondertussen ook het interieur voor van de bemande Dragon-capsule. Bij de concurrentie beweegt er ook het een en het ander want Aerojet deed een verrassend bod op ULA. Het raketnieuws ronden we af met de laatste nieuwtjes rond SLS en Orion.

Buiten New Horizons bij Pluto en Dawn bij Ceres is er nog meer (inter)planetair nieuws, met o.a. de rotatie van Mercurius, Chinese plannen voor de Maan en ook deze week heel wat Marsnieuws. 

Afronden doen we met whiskey. Die is lekkerder als de fles een paar jaar in de ruimte is geweest.

Aerojet doet bod op United Launch Alliance.
United Launch Alliance is de joint venture tussen Boeing (Delta IV) en Lockheed Martin (Atlas V). ULA verzorgt de lanceringen voor de Amerikaanse overheid (zowel de militaire als niet-militaire). Sinds kort is er ook het plan om de Atlas V in de toekomst te vervangen door de nieuwe Vulcan-raket. Deze gaat gebruik maken van een motor die ontwikkeld wordt door Blue Origin (ten nadele van de Russische RD-180).
