Deze eivolle NUDR begint – een beetje -traditioneel – met een overzicht van de voorbije lanceringen, koppelingen en testen (SpaceX, Dragon, Progress, Atlas V en SLS). Minder goed nieuws kwam er voor SLS en Orion met twee kritische rapporten van het US Government Accountability Office (GAO). Het lijkt er op dat er meer vertraging op komst is.

De New Shepard-capsule overleefde zonder problemen de test met een gesimuleerde falende parachute (de foto hiernaast toont de landing van de raket) en de mini-pendel Dream Chaser zet weer nieuwe stappen in de goede richting.

Problemen met satellieten: Waar MUOS 5 dan toch de weg naar boven lijkt begonnen te zijn, lijkt het er op dat WorldView 2 in botsing kwam met ruimteafval. Gelukkig voor de satelliet zonder blijvende gevolgen. In Amerika zien ze dan weer een stuk ruimteafval op spectaculaire wijze in de atmosfeer verbranden.

“Analogs” blijven ideaal om ruimtemissies op Aarde te simuleren, zoals het Europese Caves en het Amerikaanse NEEMO. Maar uiteraard gaat niks boven een echte ruimtevlucht. In deze NUDR vind je de 11 mini-documentaires die Time publiceerde naar aanleiding van de “Year In Space” missie.

Verjaardagen waren er ook, met de landing van Apollo 11 (aanvullend de vraag of Apollo-astronauten meer kans hebben op hartfalen) en de Viking op Mars. In het (inter)planetaire nieuws krijg je ook weer heel wat nieuwtjes, met o.a. het definitieve einde van Philae en een belangrijke koerscorrectie voor de Europese ExoMars.

Drie nieuwsberichten uit het leven op Aarde: een dronken astronaut veroorzaakt een dodelijk ongeluk, en verder nog moord en spionage.

Afronden doen we met de opgefriste “Milestones of Flight” in het National Air & Space Museum in Washington, waar de eerste terug gekeerde trap van een Falon 9 misschien niet misstaan had?
