ALTIUS wordt de nieuwste Belgische satelliet, eentje in de PROBA-reeks. De lancering wordt over een viertal jaar verwacht. Dit weekend staat er nog een andere lancering op het programma, de eerste van SpaceX voor de Amerikaanse militairen. De eerder gelanceerde Cygnus-capsule hangt ondertussen aan het internationale ruimtestation. China is in volle voorbereiding op een eigen ruimtestation. Momenteel is een belangrijke vlucht bezig, de test van een onbemande bevoorradingscapsule. China praat ook met ESA over een eventuele maan’stad’ maar de realisatie daarvan is niet voor meteen.

Ondertussen werd Peggy Whitson de meest ervaren Amerikaanse ruimtevaarder. Dat viel nog net binnen de eerste 100 dagen van het presidentschap van Trump. NASA blikte alvast terug op die eerste 100 dagen. Maar ook anderen kijken naar de NASA. Een eerste rapport geeft alvast geen goeie indruk over de status van ruimtepakken, zowel voor het ISS als de Orion-capsule. En Trump mag dan al terug naar de Maan én naar Mars willen, een ander rapport liet al uitschijnen dat een lancering van de nieuwe SLS-raket niet voor 2018 zal zijn. De NASA heeft dit ondertussen bevestigd.

Na nog wat berichten over ruimtevaarders in Canada, Rusland en Duitsland, na de bevestiging dat Arianespace terug kan beginnen te lanceren vanop Kourou besteden we uitgebreid aandacht aan een ESA-conferentie over ruimteafval, een steeds groter wordend probleem.

Terwijl de James Webb Space Telescope uitvoerig getest wordt, is Cassini bij Saturnus aan zijn laatste dagen bezig. Een duik door de ringen leverde alvast mooie beelden op. Na nog meer (inter)planetair nieuws ronden we af met een terugblik op de vlucht van Soyuz 1. De Russische kosmonaut Komarov overleefde die vlucht niet.
