Heibel omdat OneWeb een reeks lanceercontracten met Virgin Orbit schrapt. Verwarring omdat president Trump zich afvraagt waarom men bij NASA tijd verliest met terug naar de Maan te gaan. Maan 2024 – Wat wil president Trump nu eigenlijk?
Een aantal jaren geleden zette Trump het Amerikaanse ruimtevaartagentschap (terug) op het spoor. Amerika ging (terug) naar de Maan. Vergeet Mars voorlopig. En NASA kwam met een plan om tegen 2028 opnieuw Amerikanen op de Maan te laten wandelen. Eindelijk was er een plan, met verschillende stappen, met partnerships tussen industrie en NASA, met mogelijkheden voor onbemande maanlanders, met een oog op een langer en uiteindelijk continu verblijf op de Maan. Dat plan moest korte tijd later alweer herwerkt worden, want vice-president Pence liet weten dat 2028 toch wat lang duurde. Het moest al tegen 2024. Of dat verstandig was, moet nog blijken. Hoe dan ook er moet dan op korte tijd wel erg veel gebeuren, maar NASA herwerkte haar plan, zette al wat dingen in gang en liet aan het Congress al weten hoeveel geld er het eerste jaar al nodig ging zijn.

Nu lijkt president Trump te begrijpen dat we al eens op de Maan geweest zijn. En er (aldus sommigen) onze tijd verdoen met te herhalen wat we 50 jaa r geleden al eens gedaan hebben. En dat NASA zich met Mars moet bezighouden. Of heeft hij zich wat ongelukkig uitgedrukt? Hoe dan ook, verwarring troef. Niet meteen de meest ideale situatie om over centjes te praten. Is Moon 2024 al afgelopen nog voor het echt gestart was?
