Hieronder een oproep van de AAVSO (in naam van Dr. Margarita Karovska van het Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics) om de heldere veranderlijke ster CH Cyg waar te nemen. Ze behoort tot de klasse van de symbiotische veranderlijken of Z Andromedae sterren (ZAND).

Symbiotische veranderlijken zijn dubbelsterren, typisch een rode reus en een kleinere ster, soms een witte dwerg of een neutronenster. Het systeem zit in een soort van eindfase en verliest veel massa door sterrenwind en pulsatie. Doordat deze fase relatief kort duurt, zijn er maar een beperkt aantal van dit type sterren gekend. Ze zijn zo interessant omdat ze mogelijk de voorlopers vormen van een bepaald type planetaire nevel (bipolaire) of zelfs van type Ia supernova's.

De AAVSO vraagt waarnemingen, ook visuele, en het goede nieuws is dat CH Cyg al met een verrekijker te vinden is in de Zwaan.

CH Cyg observing campaign continued through 2012

As announced in AAVSO Alert Notice 454
(http://www.aavso.org/aavso-alert-notice-454) and updated in
AAVSO Special Notices #267 and #268
(http://www.aavso.org/aavso-special-notice-267 and -268),
Dr. Margarita Karovska (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics) is carrying out a multiwavelength campaign on
the symbiotic variable CH Cyg this year. The satellite
observations have taken place, and Dr. Karovska wants to
continue the observing campaign through the 2012 observing
season. She wants to study CH Cyg as the jet appears and to
see the associated color behavior, and so is requesting
continued V and particularly B observations of the system for
as long as CH Cyg is observable this season. Time series
observations are not necessary; one or two observations per
night will be sufficient. Visual observations are welcome
and are encouraged.

Please continue your observations of CH Cyg throughout the
2012 observing season and report all observations to the AAVSO
International Database as CH CYG.
