Abstract

On August 12, 2026, the Moon’s umbral shadow will make landfall in Iceland for the first time since 1954. Excitement is building and numerous events are being organized. In the talk, Sævar Helgi Bragason will shed light on preparations in Iceland, multiple challenges facing municipalities and travelers alike and what is being done to educate the general public on the spectacle. Light will also be shed on the weather prospects and the fact that the Icelandic weather is highly variable. A brief look is given at eclipses in throughout history and of course, the Northern Lights will get some attention. 

 

Bio

Sævar Helgi Bragason is a science educator and communicator. He has background in geology and astronomy with years of experience teaching astronomy to people of all ages. Sævar is a frequent guest on radio to talk about science in general, as well as being the host of a prime time TV show on science and technology. He is an author of best selling books on science for kids and adults. He does part time work for the University of Iceland and Natural Science Museum of Kópavogur, among multiple other things. Sævar has received numerous awards and recognitions for outstanding science communication.
